A letter from Andy Greenhough, Headteacher, to new parents

Dear Parent/Carer

Information for parents of students transferring from primary school to Ralph Allen School in September 2018

New Parents’ Evening: 6.00–8pm, Tuesday 3 July

New Students’ Day: Thursday 5 July

Welcome to Ralph Allen School.  I am delighted to give you details about two important events for new parents and students. I will shortly be sending you an Information for Parents book, and a Reply Booklet for you to complete and give to your daughter or son for them to hand in on New Students’ Day, Thursday 5 July.  In the meanwhile here is some essential information.

New Parents’ Evening – 6–8pm, Tuesday 3 July

We ask all parents to attend this vital evening. It is an information evening with presentations designed to tell you all you need to know about Year 7 as a parent.  You will receive notification of your child’s House shortly before the evening.

If your child is in Crescent or Holburne House you should arrive at school at 6pm for speeches in the hall at 6.15pm.  Finish:  6.45pm.

If your child is in Milsom or Pulteney House you should arrive at school at 7pm for speeches at 7.15pm.  Finish:  7.45pm.

In between 6-7.30pm there is an opportunity for you to try some sample school meals in the Snack Shack in the Quad, see information about transport to and from school, and meet representatives from two parent groups, the parents’ association RASA and the Parent Circle.

You do not need to bring your child, but you may do so if you wish (they will be asked to sit with you during the presentations).  Because of space restrictions in our hall we ask that a maximum of two people per new student attend this evening.  There will be an opportunity to meet and ask questions of senior staff and staff responsible for the welfare and learning of Year 7.  The Ralph Allen School uniform will be displayed.  The Heads of House will be introduced.

New students’ day – Thursday 5 July

This is a B&NES co-ordinated day for all year 6 schoolchildren when your son or daughter will have their first experience of Ralph Allen School as a student.  They will come to Ralph Allen for the day, meet some of their new teachers, try out new lessons, take part in a circle time session and generally familiarise themselves with life at secondary school.Students may travel to school on the school buses or the school coaches and the bus companies have been told to expect them.  You may wish to bring your child yourselves in which case they need to be here by 8.35am.  Please park in the Sulis Club and walk along.  All students will assemble in the hall in their house groups.

Students need to bring their Reply Booklets, clearly marked with their name, and give them in on arrival.

Travel to and from school

Students catching buses home will be escorted to the bus area by 3.10pm. If they have older brothers and sisters at school who will accompany them home, they should meet at 3.15pm in the hall.

Students who would like to use the RA1 Frome/Bathampton service on this day should contact Mrs de Beer on 01225 832936 ext 214 (k.debeer@ralphallenschool.com) to arrange this as space is limited.

If collecting by car please park in the Sulis Club next door to the school.  There is no parking available at school.  Please do not park on the road outside school or in the Combe Grove, Bath Clinic or Wessex Water driveways.

Times of the New Students’ Day

Start:    8.35am in the Hall.

Finish:   3.05pm for walking home or collection by car, 3.15pm if catching a bus.

Food

All students can have a free lunch (either hot food or sandwiches) on New Students’ Day.  There will be snacks available for purchase at break-time at your discretion, for which students should bring a small amount of money.

Dress and equipment

Students should wear comfortable clothing (trainers, tracksuit trousers or shorts, T shirt/sweatshirt).  Trainers should be laced up and should NOT have black soles.  Students should bring a pen.

If for any reason you are unable to come to the New Parents’ Evening we would still like to meet you. Please contact administration.officer@ralphallenschool.com and we will offer you an appointment with a member of senior staff on another day when the expectations of Ralph Allen School will be explained and you will have a chance to ask any questions.  You will still be able to go ahead and make any payments online.
