Transport - getting to Ralph Allen School

Getting to Ralph Allen School

The school is located in a beautiful position with stunning countryside views on the southeastern edge of Bath. Many of our students get to and from school actively - walking, cycling, by bus or car-share.

We want Ralph Allen to be a fit and healthy school, making more sustainable journeys and contributing less to local congestion. So we are working with:

  • Sustrans on the Active Travel to Schools Project  to encourage sustainable travel.
  • Local bus companies to improve the bus services.
  • Ralph Allen's Parent Circle to explore other ideas with parents.

Transport update 24 July 2015

RA1

We have been delighted with the inaugural RA1 service this year which has proved to be very reliable and popular with students and parents.  This service provides transport starting out at Frome, along the A36, through Bathampton village and Bathwick and up Bathwick Hill to Ralph Allen School.  Many parents have signed up for a place on the vehicle for the next academic year 2015-16; however there are still a few places available.  Parents wishing to find out more information and/or make an application will find details below.

RA2

We are pleased to announce the commencement of the new RA2 service.  This transport will be starting in Dovers Park, Bathford, going through Batheaston, along the London Road, Lambridge, Bathwick and up Bathwick Hill to Ralph Allen School.  A significant number of parents have taken up a place on this vehicle for the next academic year 2015-16;  once again there are still a few places available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Parents wishing to find out more information and/or make an application will find details below.

Change of service from Buglers No. 9 to Faresaver 267/287

We have been informed that Buglers Number 9 bus is withdrawn from service from July 2015. We have been advised that the service to these areas will now be provided through Faresaver buses.  There are slight changes to the route which will mean that it will not be coming directly through Moorland Road/Coronation Avenue.  The new service (267 service) starts at the Odd Down Park and Ride, will pick up down the Wellsway and on the Bear Flat, into the City Centre (students change onto the 287 service) and up to Ralph Allen School via Bathwick Hill.  Students catching the 267 prior to the city centre should purchase a through ticket which includes the onward journey on the 287 (students change vehicle in the city centre at the Ambury stop, where the 287 will be waiting for Ralph Allen students).  Prices and timetables are published by Faresaver on their website, and also here.

267/287 bus service from September 2015, serving Odd Down Park and Ride, the Wellsway, Englishcombe Lane, Bear Flat, city centre (Ambury), Dorchester Street, Bathwick Hill to Ralph Allen School:  for details click here

RA99

Regrettably the RA99 has not proved cost-effective despite running it five nights a week.  However, we are aware that some students would benefit from an after-school service (4.30pm) so we are currently exploring alternative ways of providing this service.  As soon as details are available they will be published here and in the parents’ e-news.

NEWS & UPDATES:

We have set up bus payments online ready for parents to pay for the RA1 and RA2 services.

Our students come from all over Bath and the nearby villages. This is how we suggest travelling:

If you live in an area that isn’t mentioned here, please contact Mrs Caroline Holden (c.holden@ralphallenschool.com) or Mrs Jo Marsh (j.marsh@ralphallenschool.com),  for advice on how your child can get to school. If you have any updated information about any aspect of the transport please email so we can update this page.

By bus

A number of different buses come to the school. Many of them drop off and pick up within the school grounds. Some are designated school buses, others are public buses. They are run by various bus companies including:

Other buses come close to the school (for example, the 1, which comes to Combe Down, a 5-10-minute walk from the school).

Most students pay for their own travel, though some students (for example, those living in some of the local villages) travel free of charge. Season tickets can be bought from the bus companies to keep costs to a minimum.

Help is available online with journey planning by bus:

Certain routes (such as the X86) do not run a service beyond the end of the normal school day. For students attending after school clubs, the best option is to take a bus to the University of Bath or to the bus station. From there, buses are available to a variety of destinations

Bath Rider bus ticket

This is a ticket that can be used on all buses in and around Bath regardless of the bus company providing the service.

  • A one-day Bath Rider can be bought on the bus: £4 for children, £4.50 adults.
  • A weekly Bath Rider ticket can be bought from the bus station: £16.50 for children, £17.50 adults.

Check at the bus station to make sure that the bus you want to use is covered.

Cycling

Students who cycle can leave their bikes locked in bike racks at the school. There are a number of puncture repair kits, pumps and tools in school which students can use.

Journey planners are available online for cyclists:

If you live in BANES, free cycling lessons are available:

Car-sharing

Some parents find it convenient to drop off/collect their children on their travels and are happy to car share. It is a good way of reducing costs and congestion.

The Sulis Club car park (next door to the school) is used for drop-offs and pick-ups to keep the school’s car park clear for buses.

Active Travel to Schools Project

The Active Travel to Schools Project aims to get the whole school community working together to make the school journey sustainable, healthy and enjoyable for everyone. 'Active Travel' includes:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Buses
  • Car shares.

We want a fitter and happier school, with less local congestion, making more sustainable journeys. The project is run thanks to funding from the Travel West Local Sustainable Transport Fund and is running across B&NES and other Local Authorities in the South West. For any queries or suggestions or to find out more about sustainable travel to and from school, contact our local Active Travel to Schools Officer.
