COUNTY FINALISTS WEST OF ENGLAND WINTER SCHOOL GAMES

The University of the West of England and SGS College in Bristol played host to this year’s West of England Winter School Games.

This annual multi-sports event celebrates the culmination of year-round inter-school competition with the very best school teams coming together to compete in the county final stage of the national schools competitions.

As this year’s B&NES Schools Winners, Ralph Allen School has been delighted to represent B&NES in the Badminton, Netball and Table Tennis events.

County Badminton Teams

This year has been a hugely successful one for the whole badminton squad, with both ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams competing in the local schools events, with 3 of our teams all qualifying for the county finals of the Centre Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships. Some of Ralph Allen’s strongest ever players competed in the U16 boys, U14 boys and U14 girls events with all 3 teams finishing in a very respectable 3rd place overall. The U16 boys team of Joe Prescott, Ben Richards, Paddy Haresnape and Max Workman fought hard against very strong opposition from Bristol Grammar, Gordano and Mangotsfield. The U14 boys team of Adam Squires, Alfie Prescott, Zak Elley, Jack Bardzil and Patrick Fountain played some very entertaining and closely fought matches against Bristol Grammar, Gordano and Hanham Woods. The U14 girls team of Ella Pears, Matilda Patterson, Layla Raithby and Jasmine Lowe enjoyed some great games against Abbeywood, Badminton and Gordano. All in all, a challenging but very enjoyable day, where all the players made a huge contribution and should all be very proud of their achievement at this high standard of competition.

County Netball Team

The route to the Winter Games County Netball finals has not been an easy one for the The Yr 9 Netball Team. They came runners up in the BANES Netball Tournament (narrowly beaten by Hayesfield School) which took place before Christmas. This qualified them for the quarterfinals of the County competition which meant a knockout game against Bristol School St Bernadettes. A win here gave us qualification for the Winter Games County Finals where we met the other top 3 schools in the County. We suffered a bit going into this competition with injury but we still produced some excellent play. Unfortunately after a good start with Lily Knight playing her heart out as centre for the entire game, we lost our semi final against SBL school from South Gloucestershire and went into the 3rd/4th playoff. We really wanted those medals but it didn’t go our way and despite some great shooting from captain Hermione Scattergood we lost the play off to Priory School. But a big well done to the girls, they are still the 4th best team in the County. In our picture is Pamela Cookey England Captain who was there for a question and answer session with the girls and was very inspiring.

County Table Tennis Team

This is the second year in a row that Ralph Allen has qualified for the county finals. The U14 boys team of Bruno Foulstone, Aidon Higgins, Max Davis and Dillon Pike finished in 3rd place overall and were presented with bronze medals to celebrate their achievement in the competition. Some excellent play in both singles and doubles, with impressive 4-1 wins over Fairfield, Hanham Woods and Yate.

Inclusive Multi Sports Team

Having enjoyed this competition last year, Ralph Allen entered the Inclusive Games Competition again. Some of the team had participated last year and were determined to improve their final position of 8th. The team played three different sports; Inclusive Zone Basketball (IZB), Sitting Volleyball and Boccia. The team won two out of three matches in both the IZB and the Sitting Volleyball and all their matches in the Boccia. This was a fantastic performance and the team came away with a Bronze medal! Special mention needs to go to Maisie and Tara for great wheelchair and tactical play in IZB, also to Jody and Mollie for good defensive play in the wing zones. Our wins in Boccia were helped greatly by the accurate shots played by Amy and Eloise. The sitting volleyball was a real team effort, with some strong serving by Eloise and Mollie in particular, although everyone contributed to winning points for the team. Well done everyone!
