The Yonex All England Open Championships is the oldest international tournament in world badminton with the first one played in 1899. It is one of five BWF World Premier Superseries events which are regarded as the ‘Grand Slam’ or ‘Major’ tournaments in the badminton world, and are the most coveted by the elite players.
Following on from their success in the National Schools Badminton Championships, the whole badminton squad, including the U16 and U14 ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, were invited to attend the event and see the world’s very best players compete in the 2nd round of the singles, doubles and mixed doubles disciplines.
Highlights of the day included watching:
 Men’s world number 1 Chen Long (China)
 Men’s world number 2 Jan O Jorgensen (Denmark)
 Women’s world number 1 Li Xuerui (China)
 Women’s world number 6 Carolina Marin (Spain)
 Mixed doubles world number 5's Chris & Gabby Adcock (England)
There was also the opportunity for the students to experience playing wheelchair badminton, watch the racket stringing team prepare rackets for the players and also browse the merchandise in the Yonex Pro Gear Shopping area.
Overall, an exciting and inspiring experience for all of the players in the school badminton squad and a very fitting reward for them achieving 3rd place overall in the West of England Badminton County Finals.
