Senior School Shield won by Ralph Allen Students at Musketeers Annual Chess Congress 2017

The Musketeers Annual Chess Congress 2017

Five Ralph Allen pupils took part in The Musketeers Annual Chess Congress 2017 at Cheltenham on Saturday 18 November. The team won the Senior School Shield in the name of Ralph Allen.  Their prizes are a shield that will be engraved with the name of Ralph Allen 2017, to be returned next year, and a giant chess set to keep for the school.

The team was made up of Jack Frith and Robin Veitch from year 8 and Fiona Thet, Alex Timbrell and Daniel Howard from year 7, all of whom have represented Somerset at county level.

It was a very exciting win as they were level on points with Churchill Academy Weston Super Mare (last year’s winners) going into the last round.  They pulled together magnificently as a team to beat them 45 -43.  There were also individual successes as Fiona emerged U12 girl champion from a very large field and Jack runner up in the U13 boys (a tough group as they were mixed in with the U14s).

The win has really put Ralph Allen on the chess map, as although the individuals are perhaps familiar names on the circuit, it was the first time they played for the school.

Congratulations to Jack, Robin, Fiona, Alex and Daniel.

Mr Chantry, Head of School, said, 'We are delighted and proud of their achievement, and very grateful for the prize!'
