Five Ralph Allen and two KES pupils were crowned Lego Robotics World Champions in April following their success in the finals held in St Louis, Missouri, USA. Beating off competition from over 20,000 teams worldwide the UK champions went on to grab the world title impressing the judges with their sophisticated robot and their innovative fingerprint scanning doorbell designed to reduce anxiety for older people. Team members Claudia, Dani, Tom, Freya, Joe, Max and Rafi have spent well over 800 hours working on their projects. They have carried out research with Age UK to ensure the suitability of their doorbell product and then collaborated with Bath Institute of Medical Engineering and Rotork to build a working prototype. Their robot, nicknamed ‘The Beast’ due to its incredible size and complexity, is capable of automatically carrying out a series of missions in the competition arena due to the excellent programming the team have used.
