2018 B&NES Badminton Schools Championships

This annual competition brings together the best badminton players from all of the local schools, with Ralph Allen School having a strong history including both the U14 and U16 boys teams winning in 2014 and reaching the County Finals.

The boys U14 team for this year came an impressive 2nd place overall in their competition with wins against Wellsway (5-0) and Beechen Cliff (4-1) and a hard fought final match versus the eventual winners Chew Valley (1-4). Fred Mallory-Bains, Josh Pruce, Luther Gaines White and Jake Barrington all played especially well, demonstrating great finesse, disguise, quality of shot making and determination to win in their matches.

The boys U16 A team for this year came a well-deserved 3rd place overall in their competition with wins against Wellsway (3-2) and Writhlington (3-2), a tough defeat to Beechen Cliff (1-4), and a solid win versus Norton Hill (4-1) in the playoff stage. Finlay Thomas, Luke Hamer, Rhys Cahill and Thibault Swindells spearheaded the Ralph Allen School campaign with virtuoso performances in the singles and great team play in the doubles.

The boys U16 B team made their first appearance in the competition this year, with Vallen Oliver, Joe Smith, Ethan Read and Tommy Barnett taking on Chew Valley and Norton Hill in their group stage. Finishing in a respectable 7th place overall was a pleasing result following some well fought and entertaining matches where the players performed at their best whilst being put under pressure from strong opponents.
