Integrating careers education within all curriculum subjects enables students to understand the relevance of their learning and supports informed decision-making about future pathways. At Ralph Allen, all departments take responsibility for developing the knowledge, skills and attributes students need for their next steps in education, employment or training that link to their subject. Curriculum areas regularly review and refine their schemes of learning to ensure they deliver both examination specifications and the transferable skills required by an evolving labour market. Staff develop and update resources to explicitly link subject content to real-world applications; for example, within Science, each unit begins with a focus on relevant career pathways and workplace contexts to deepen students’ understanding of how learning within a particular topic is applied beyond the classroom.

Where possible, students engage directly with employers and industry specialists, and the school is working strategically to strengthen these partnerships across all curriculum areas. Current examples include KS4 Science visits to Hinkley Point nuclear power station and KS3 enrichment through talks from visiting authors, providing meaningful encounters with employers that raise aspirations and broaden career awareness.
