The Ralph Allen Community consists of approximately 1300 pupils, 210 joining Year 7 each academic year (6 forms of entry) and approximately 280 pupils in the sixth form. We serve the community of Bath and villages to the south of the city. Adjacent to Combe Down village, the school is surrounded by green sites managed by English Nature and the National Trust. The school is named after Ralph Allen (1693-1764), the Bath mine owner, entrepreneur and philanthropist who contributed much to the building of Georgian Bath and the early development of the post office. The school was built in 1957 and has since been further extended and developed.
The school campus undergoes a continuous programme of improvement to ensure that facilities meet the needs for all pupils studying the range of courses on offer. Facilities range from specialised Science classrooms, a large and bright dining area, all-weather pitch and a dark room used by students studying the Photography courses. The school has worked closely with ex-student Fergus Feilden and his architectural practice Feilden Fowles on many of the building projects across the year including the Lee Centre, Rose Building and Dining Hall, ensuring that they are exemplary environmental buildings, designed with ‘sensible design’ rather than environmental add-ons. The local community regards the school highly and gives us considerable support. In turn, the school provides venues and facilities for many community activities and events.
