Homework

Ralph Allen School

Research supports the link between homework and educational achievement. At Ralph Allen we value the concept of homework as it is shown to:

1. Develop independent learning skills, including time management.

2. Provide opportunities for students to:

  • Reinforce and develop learning from lessons
  • extend and deepen their learning
  • practise skills learned in class

3. Provides opportunities for parents/carers to be involved with their students’ learning.

We are aware that homework can, at times, be a cause of anxiety and stress for students, parents/carers and teachers and so homework support is offered to students.

Year 10-11

Dependent on the nature of a subject and exam board requirements, the style of homework activities will differ. Homework tasks range from retrieval activities and exam questions to completing coursework (NEA) or an activity started in class. Class teachers will set homework for their subject approximately every 1-2 weeks, providing clear instructions on Classcharts and an indication of the time to be spent on a task.

Year 8-9

Dependent on the nature of a subject, the style of homework activities in Year 8 and 9 may will differ. Homework tasks range from retrieval activities and practice test questions to completing extended tasks. Class teachers will set homework for their subject approximately every 2 weeks, providing clear instructions on Classcharts and an indication of the time to be spent on a task.

Year 7

Following consultation with teachers, students, parents/carers and research regarding the value and importance of homework, year 7 students follow a retrieval homework approach using bespoke knowledge organisers developed by Curriculum Teams. This approach more closely meets the four key criteria listed above, supporting students to develop retrieval skills for the future. Termly homework booklets can be found at the links below, each including an outline of how to use the knowledge organiser, details explaining the retrieval method to use for the term, subject knowledge organisers and the timetable for students to follow.

The timetable states which subject to focus on each day. Optional ‘push myself’ tasks provide challenge and an opportunity for creativity and to develop cross curricular links between subjects.
