Year 11 Oxford Taster Day
On Tuesday 28 January, we took 27 year 11 students to visit Lincoln College, Oxford on a taster day to find out what it was like studying at Oxford as well as the application process. We travelled by coach and were met at Lincoln by Katie Osman, their School Liaison Officer, who gave us a very informative presentation on how the application process for Oxford and Cambridge works. This was then followed by a tour of Lincoln College with some current students including Ralph Allen’s very own Joe Alder who left Ralph Allen in the summer of 2018 and is now in his second term at Oxford. We also saw the Bodleian Library and the Radcliffe Camera. This was a great opportunity for our students to ask Joe and the other Lincoln students what it was really like studying at Oxford.
Katie Osman then gave a further presentation on super-curricular reading and activities which students can be developing at this stage of their school career in order to pursue their interests in their subject beyond the scope of their GCSE courses; students also received helpful advice on what specific A level subjects were required for certain courses. This was followed by a talk and workshop on criminal law where our students were very ready to engage with the lecturer’s often challenging questions.
We then walked to St Catherine’s College, known as Catz, about 15 minutes from Lincoln, to see a more modern college – and one where two former RAS students currently have places. A member of the Catz Admissions department gave us a guided tour and it was interesting to see a very different style of college.
We hope the trip will encourage our students to consider applying to Oxford or Cambridge as one of their future options and provide them with helpful information and feedback as they progress towards their GCSEs and beyond.
Many thanks to Mr Forrester for accompanying us on the trip.
Ms Katie Rutter, Deputy Head of Sixth Form
